India has the second largest population after China and is one of the world's fastest growing economies. In spite of these gains, a large percentage of its growing population lives under the global poverty line of $1.25 per day. Economic gains are uneven when comparing social groups, geographic regions, and urban vs rural areas. The poor have very limited access to educational resources due to the state of public schools and libraries, making it difficult to raise themselves out of poverty.
These vast economic and educational disparities lead READ Global to chose India as the next step in its expansion plan. READ India opened its office near Delhi in 2007.
The first READ India Community Library and Resource Center opened in June 2008 in the very impoverished area of Sunderbans in West Bengal. Construction is currently in progress for three more centers to open in 2009 in Rajasthan and Manipur and expansion to a 4th Indian state is being explored in the southern part of the country. |
