READ believes that a Community Library and Resource Center is an economically efficient way to impact large numbers of rural residents—men and women, boys and girls, from very young to very old. With it’s current 49 Centers, it serves over 540,000 people annually.
While every READ Center is as unique as the community it serves, they all include most of the following components:
- 3,000-to-5,000 books, primarily in the local language
- Current newspapers and magazines
- Early Childhood Development Section that includes child-friendly furnishings, learning toys, and reading materials
- Women’s Section featuring literature and learning materials relevant to women
- Designated areas for adults, student study, administration, and reference
- Community activity room for meetings and events
- Hours of operation that accommodate all community members, including school children and working adults
- Communications Center with a telephone, fax, scanning, and copying services
- Computer Center with internet capabilities and training classes
- Audiovisual tools, including: DVD player, CD player, overhead projector, television, video projector, and slide projector
- And READ Centers are spacious—at least 285 sq. meters or 3050 sq. feet in size
READ refers to its Centers as Community Library and Resource Centers because not only do they offer a wide selection of books and literacy training, they offer so much more:
Health
- On-site health clinics
- Private exam areas for visiting doctors
- Maternity health
- Dental clinics
- Nutrition & safe motherhood classes
- HIV/AIDS awareness
Vocational Training:
- Computer literacy
- Farming
- Floriculture
- Pest management
- Bee-keeping
- And anything else that meets the needs of the community
