READ’s Center in Jhuwani has some 5,300 books, but it took just a few of them to change 12-year-old Sushma’s life forever.
She’d been a sickly and unsocial child, who played alone in debris near her home. Initially, her conservative parents resisted sending her to the new READ Center, not trusting “outsiders”. But the READ Center was built by and for the community, not outsiders, and once Sushma was allowed to visit, she immersed herself in its welcoming educational and recreational village environment.
| Sushma is now seen laughing and learning alongside other children. Her respiratory problems are gone because she no longer plays in filth. With new health and hope for the future, her appreciative parents say, “We were gripped with the incorrect fear that Sushma will be spoilt if she visited the library; but seeing the result, we now force our friends to let their children to go the library.”
