Of 94 developing countries, India is 76th in relation to the educational development index and has the dubious distinction of having the largest number of illiterates and out-of-school children in the world. Rural literacy rates are nearly 20% less than urban rates and rural female literacy is less than 50%.
Using the READ model of pairing non-profit libraries and for-profit businesses, READ India is working to establish sustainable community libraries, strengthen existing rural community resources, and aid under-motivated teachers. READ India has identified several potential library sites, and committed to build its first library in the village of Ullon in West Bengal. READ has met with government agencies, international and local development organizations and is developing alliances that will facilitate access to education and technology |
