Read’s Model for Sustainable Rural Development
The success of the READ model is its ability to empower people, enabling them to comprehend their social, political and economic position, confront their situation and pursue change collectively. READ’s role becomes one of facilitator of a needs-based and demand-driven approach that enables communities to have ownership in the process.
The READ model features three components:
- Educational Development through construction of self-sustaining library community centers.
- Economic Development through sustaining projects that support the library as well as provide needed infrastructure and jobs in villages.
- Community Development through community centers, wall newspapers, clinics and workshops.
The performance of every partner in the READ project continuum – from the local communities, in-country staff and board, to the READ Global administrative staff and Board of Directors – is guided by the model’s Best Practices, which encompass project ownership, accountability, sustainability and collaboration. |
