Sushmita Lama

Asia Regional Manager

Sushmita has worked in the development sector for almost a decade, focusing on gender equality and women’s empowerment, media engagement for social change, and advocacy for the human rights of marginalized groups.

She began her career in the non-profit sector in 2012 at READ Nepal, where she worked for more than three years doing communications, grant writing, and project coordination. She then spent four years with the Media Advocacy Group managing projects on gender equality in and through the media, women’s empowerment, civic education, the right to information, and advocacy for Dalit rights. As a fellow of the Atlas Corps Fellowship 2017-2018, Sushmita served on Internews’ Global Tech Program Team in DC, USA, supporting event management, and contributed to strengthening the program’s monitoring and evaluation.

Sushmita enjoys working with a wide range of people and is particularly passionate about advocating for the rights of women and for socially disadvantaged communities to bring about meaningful social change. She believes that storytelling can be used to empower people and influence their attitudes, societal values, and norms. Sushmita has a Master’s degree in Sociology from Nepal’s Tribhuwan University and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Gender Studies. She is currently based in Kathmandu, Nepal.
