Opening of Madi READ Center

With the help of an ambitious READ supporter, the village of Madi now has an ally in the fight against rural poverty. After embarking on a life-changing health and fitness regimen, Sarah Street trained for the New York Half Marathon and used the race as an opportunity to raise awareness about READ’s work. In just five weeks, she raised $100,000—double her original goal! Half of the funds were used to build the Madi READ Satellite Center, inaugurated in August, and the rest will be used to build a second Satellite Center in Nepal.

Barsa Silwal

Barsa Silwal is a 39-year-old widowed mother of two from Chitwan, Nepal. When her husband passed away, she struggled to provide food and shelter for her son and daughter. Her single status left her ostracized in her community, and her husband’s family wouldn’t support her because she is a member of a different caste. As a single woman without a job, education, or any family support, she worried about her future and that of her children.

Indian School Children

For children living in rural India, formal schools are often inaccessible or lacking in resources. The nearest town with a school may be far away, and parents are anxious about letting children travel long distances on their own, especially girls. As a result, many children are pulled out of school before they reach their teens—or they never start school in the first place. This is the case in Chhainsa, in Haryana, India, where the nearest formal school is three hours away by foot. READ India partnered with Chhainsa to open a Center in March of 2013 to offer educational resources and opportunities for the entire community—from children to the elderly and illiterate.
