READ Nepal opens 54th Center

Opening of Madi READ Center

With the help of an ambitious READ supporter, the village of Madi now has an ally in the fight against rural poverty. After embarking on a life-changing health and fitness regimen, Sarah Street trained for the New York Half Marathon and used the race as an opportunity to raise awareness about READ’s work. In just five weeks, she raised $100,000—double her original goal! Half of the funds were used to build the Madi READ Satellite Center, inaugurated in August, and the rest will be used to build a second Satellite Center in Nepal.

The village of Madi lies in a remote area of Nepal, and it takes two hours of driving from the nearest town on rough roads to reach the village. Its low-lying areas are prone to flooding, making it inaccessible during the monsoon season. As a result, educational resources are few and far between, and 38% of men and 33% of women in the village cannot read.
